4 Best Quotes from Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose

A New Earth

If you’ve read Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth then you might remember some of these core concepts of Tolle’s Philosophy. A New Earth repeats many of the lessons from Tolle’s most popular book, The Power of Now. But it also explains how to handle what the author refers to as your “pain body.” A collection of the negative emotions that get stuck in your subconscious the more you ignore them. External events can trigger these painful feelings even though you’ve forgotten what event caused them in the first place. The negative emotions can inhibit your confidence and prevent growth.

A New Earth’s Plan for Emotional Growth

Tolle’s suggested method of overcoming these roadblocks to emotional growth are:

  1. Non Resistance
  2. Non Judgment
  3. Non-Attachment

The tools he suggests for achieving this are awakened doing, acceptance, joy, and enthusiasm. I’ve highlighted a quote for each of these below.

Awakened Doing

He suggests you practice these values by always focusing on exactly what you are doing. Even if it’s a mundane task like washing dishes, focus on that instead of wasting mental energy worrying about some future event.

A new Earth Quote:

“You don’t have to wait for something “meaningful” to come into your life so that you can finally enjoy what you do. There is more meaning in joy than you will ever need. The “waiting to start living” syndrome is one of the most common delusions of the unconscious state.”

The next suggestion is to accept the present moment no matter what.

I find this a bit challenging. I’m just as addicted to stimulation as many people so I often think about interesting ideas, or my goals. Instead Tolle says pay attention to the present moment. By thinking about more interesting ideas instead of focusing on washing the dishes you are resisting the present moment. If you are satisfied with the current situation you don’t need to think about anything else.

This is easy to prove. Imagine chatting with or doing something really funny with your friends. You probably aren’t thinking about anything else. That’s because you are satisfied and don’t need anything else to make you feel good.

When you accept the present moment, “awakened doing,” as Tolle calls it, is natural.

A New Earth Quote:

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.”
― Eckhart TolleA New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose

Just as Tolle implies here, if you hate your current situation, it will make you feel bad. But if you can accept it, life becomes easier.

Tolle of course explains that this doesn’t mean you should become a push over and allow anything into your life. You still need to have the courage to reject some things from your life when possible.

The point is that there are many inevitable disappointments in life. It is your choice to either learn and grow from them or let them dominate your mind with negativity.

The next requirement, according to Tolle is Joy.

He explains that happiness is usually pleasure from external stimulation. Such as excitement about winning a prize. But Joy is deeper and internal.

 A New Earth Quote:

“The joy of Being, which is the only true happiness, cannot come to you through any form, possession, achievement, person, or event—through anything that happens. That joy cannot come to you—ever. It emanates from the formless dimension within you, from consciousness itself and thus is one with who you are.”

This one is essential in my opinion. Because it implies engagement with reality. Nonresistance, non judgment, and non-attachment all sound like difficult to achieve spiritual ideals. Unfortunately, some people try to achieve these ideals by not caring about anything. They might stop caring about needing to shower and smell good for people. They might become completely disengaged from society while abstaining from their selfish desires.

The problem with that approach is that it is apathy. It isn’t true nonresistance and non-attachment. Even though they abstain from sex, gluttony, and career success, those desires are still present but only suppressed. The answer is to balance selfish desires with contributing to others. This makes engagement and enthusiasm much easier.

A New Earth Quote

“Enthusiasm brings an enormous empowerment into what you do, so that all those who have not accessed that power would look upon “your” achievements in awe and may equate them with who you are.

Unlike egoic wanting, which creates opposition in direct proportion to the intensity of its wanting, enthusiasm never opposes. It is non-confrontational. Its activity does not create winners and losers. It is based on inclusion, not exclusion, of others. It does not need to use and manipulate people, because it is the power of creation itself and so does not need to take energy from some secondary source.”
― Eckhart TolleA New Earth: Create a Better Life

Tolle claims that the ego and its petty goals cannot coexist with enthusiasm. When you enthusiastically engage reality your problems are more likely to melt away in the background. Instead of worrying about some future event, you focus on enjoying the present moment.
