A lot of fears are learned. For example you might fear approaching women because you were rejected by them before. But the fear of heights, and falling from them, is one of the few fears that come more naturally to us.
How to Overcome Fear of Heights
The fear of falling is often not based on anything that indicates you could actually fall. It’s simply apprehension at your imagination’s worry about falling even when you won’t. Focus on the reasons why you are completely safe. The solid window, hand rails, and other safety measures that prevent you from actually falling.
Once you realize you don’t need to be afraid, you can take a deep breathe and try to relax. Remind yourself that you are safe. As long as you are actually safe, think about something else. Remember to breathe. Fears can trigger panic responses and by remembering to breathe normally you will help yourself stay calm.
Go to higher places
Face your fear gradually. Go to some high places and look out the window. Go to even higher places. Stay safe, but also remind yourself that you are safe. Don’t take any dangerous risks to overcome this fear.
Psychologists used to suggest you face your fears head on to overcome them. If you were afraid of water, they would throw you in the pool to swim or drown to conquer your fear. If you were afraid of heights they would suggest you go skydiving. But for people with severe phobias, this can seriously backfire and even make their fears worse. It’s important to gradually expose yourself to higher and higher places if you want to overcome fear of heights.
Eventually, you too can build the courage to jump out of an airplane thousands of feet in the air and experience the unique adrenaline rush of free-falling before opening your parachute and gliding down to the ground below. If you want to overcome all your fears, this is a great fear to conquer. But remember to stay safe and don’t take any unnecessary risks. If someday you develop the courage to skydive, make sure you take every precaution, but don’t get overwhelmed with fear. As long as you know everything will be okay, then you should be able to overcome fear of heights.
